Poison centers help children and adults of all ages. In fact, many of the calls we receive are from older adults and their caregivers. As we age, we are more likely to take multiple medications, and that increases the chance of a medication mix-up. One of the most common — and potentially dangerous — poisons in the home is medication when it’s taken by the wrong person, in the wrong amount or at the wrong time.
Keep the Kentucky Poison Center number nearby in case a medication mistake happens: 1-800-222-1222. Specially trained nurses and pharmacists are available to answer your call. They are specialists in poison information and medication safety, and they can quickly and confidentially help you.

Starting a New Medication? Ask These Questions
Whether your medication is prescribed by your doctor or purchased over the counter, make sure you understand:
- What is the name of this medication?
- What is it used for?
- What side effects should I watch for?
- How much should I take, and how often?
- What should I do if I miss a dose or accidentally take an extra dose?
- Are there foods, drinks or other medications I should avoid while taking this?
Keep a written list of your medications and bring it to all medical appointments.
Expecting Grandchildren or Young Visitors?
If children will be visiting your home, take extra steps to keep medications and household products out of sight and reach. Be sure to look at our home safety checklist.
Even if you usually do not have children in your home, a quick safety check can help prevent accidental poisonings.
